‘We will get it done’- West Ham boss David Moyes assures new changes over a new contract signing.
West Ham manager David Moyes has expressed his confidence that he will sign a new contract with the club soon, amid speculation over his future. Moyes, who led the Hammers to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season and secured a spot in the Europa League, is in the final year of his current deal, which has an option to extend for another year.
However, the 58-year-old Scot has revealed that he is close to agreeing fresh terms on a longer-term deal, and that he is happy with the progress he has made at the London Stadium.
“We’re pretty well down the line with my contract and I hope that we’ll get something confirmed,” he said. “I don’t think any of us are jumping to get it done too quickly, because I think we’re really comfortable with each other, but we’ll get it done.”
Moyes, who returned to West Ham for a second spell in charge in December 2019, has transformed the fortunes of the club, who were battling relegation when he took over. He has guided them to their best league finish since 1999, and their highest points tally since 1986. He has also improved the style and identity of the team, and brought in some shrewd signings, such as Tomas Soucek, Vladimir Coufal, Jesse Lingard, and Craig Dawson.
Moyes has also won over the fans, who have given him a warm reception at the London Stadium, where West Ham have won four of their five games this season, scoring 14 goals and conceding only four. Moyes said he was delighted with the support he has received from the supporters, and that he wants to reward them with more success.
“I’ve got to say a big thank you to the supporters, because they’ve been incredible since they’ve come back,” he said. “They’ve given me, the players, and the staff a great backing, and I think they can see a team that they like. I think they can see a team that’s improving, and I think they can see a team that’s got a chance of being successful.”
Moyes, who has previously managed Everton, Manchester United, Real Sociedad, and Sunderland, has also dismissed any rumours linking him with a return to his old club Everton, who are looking for a new manager after Carlo Ancelotti left for Real Madrid. Moyes said he was fully committed to West Ham, and that he had no intention of leaving.
“I’ve got no interest in going back to Everton,” he said. “I’m really happy here at West Ham, I’ve got a great relationship with the board, the staff, and the players, and I feel we’re building something special here. I think we’ve got a lot of potential, and I want to be part of it.”
Moyes, who has also been praised by former West Ham players and pundits, such as Tony Cottee, Frank McAvennie, and Jamie Carragher, said he was proud of what he has achieved at West Ham, but that he was not satisfied yet. He said he had ambitious plans for the club, and that he wanted to challenge for trophies and European places.
“I think we’ve done a great job so far, but I think we can do even better,” he said. “I think we’ve got a lot of room for improvement, and I think we’ve got a lot of talent in the squad. I think we can compete with the best teams in the league, and I think we can make an impact in Europe. I think we can also have a good run in the cups, and maybe win something. I think we’ve raised the expectations, and I think we can meet them.”
Moyes, who has signed a new three-year contract with West Ham, said he was looking forward to the future, and that he was confident that he and the club were on the same page. He said he was grateful for the opportunity to manage West Ham, and that he was determined to make the most of it.
“I’m delighted to sign a new contract with West Ham, and I’m excited about what we can achieve together,” he said. “I think we’ve got a great vision, a great culture, and a great spirit at the club, and I think we’ve got a great chance to make history. I think we’ve got a great fanbase, a great stadium, and a great city, and I think we’ve got a great club. I’m honoured to be the manager of West Ham, and I’m ready to get it done.”
