A Texas high school coach accused of killing a woman and her 6-year-old daughter in a hit and run accident has resigned, the school told the Beaumont Enterprise.
Carl Broussard, 53, had been employed at West Orange-Stark High (Orange, Texas) as a head powerlifting coach, assistant football coach and construction trades teacher.
He faces two second-degree felony charges of accident involving death. He was arrested last week and released on $100,000 bond on each charge. As he left the police station, he told KBMT that he’s “sorry for the lives lost” and declined further comment.
Orange Police say Ava Lewis, 25, and her daughter, LaMya Newhouse, a kindergartner, were both killed when crossing the street and being struck by a car. Witness told police that after the accident, the car continued and never stopped.
According to the probable cause affidavit, Broussard told detectives he heard a “thud” that damaged his windshield. He then turned into a garage and remained there briefly without checking to see what he hit.
He brought the car to his girlfriend’s house and she went to the scene and then called him to alert him that two people had been hit. The affidavit said he tried to conceal his 1993 Geo Prism inside his girlfriend’s garage and neglected to contact police after learning of the cash.
