When most of us eat chips the worst that can happen is we will end up adding a couple of inches to our waistline.
But for Nick Hess, indulging in the potato snack leaves him drunk, confused, and slurring his words.
The 35-year-old suffers from the extremely rare auto-brewery syndrome, which sees his stomach turn carbohydrates into alcohol.
Before
receiving the extraordinary diagnosis his own wife even questioned
whether he was an alcoholic and stashing bottles of booze in their home
in Columbus, Ohio.
'When she first accused me of being drunk, without drinking I thought she was crazy,' he told the Daily Mirror.
'But friends and family thought, 'maybe he is over there, drinking by himself, a secret alcoholic.'
Mr Hess told how sometimes the symptoms could take days to develop, but on other occasions the onset would be almost immediate.
'It
was weird, I'd eat some carbs and all of a sudden I was goofy, vulgar.
Every day for a year I would wake up and vomit,' he told the BBC.
