Edward “Ted” Kennedy was a United States Senator representing the State of Massachusetts and a senior member of the Democratic Party. He served in office 47 years starting in November 1962 until his passing on August 25th, 2009.
He is the brother of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and former U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy.
According to History.com on July 18, 1969 Senator Kennedy was driving home from a party on Chappaquiddick Island when he drove off a wooden bridge into a tide-swept pond.
As the Oldsmobile was swept with the rapid current Senator Kennedy escaped the sinking vehicle. Senator Kennedy’s passenger, 28 year old Mary Jo Kopechne did not escape. Kennedy dove in repeatedly to try to rescue Kopechne with no success
